Baby Toboggan Hat- Beginner Level

Baby Toboggan Hat

Materials Needed
Sport/DK weight yarn
*(I used two colors, one for the base beanie, and one for the ribbing and pom-pom)
G hook
Tapestry needle
Scissors

Instructions

Base Beanie
Chain 3, slip stitch in first stitch to form a ring,

ROUND 1: Chain 2, 10 dc in ring. Join at second loop of ch 2.

ROUND 2: Chain 2, dc in same stitch as sl st join. 2 dc in next stitch and each stitch around. Join. (20 stitches)

ROUND 3: Chain 2, dc in same st as sl st join. 1 dc in next st. *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st.* Repeat around. Join. (30 stitches)

ROUND 4: Chain 2, dc in same st as sl st join. 1 dc in next 2 st. *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 st.* Repeat around. (40 stitches)

(If you want a larger size, you can increase the size by adding 1 dc in each round.  So for example the next round would read Chain 2, dc in the same st as sl st to join. *1 dc in the next 3 st.  2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 3st.* Repeat around. [50 stitches])

ROUND 5 : Chain 2, dc in each stitch around. Join. (40 stitches)

Continue ROUND 5 until hat reaches desired length, (I usually aim for about 4.5 inches past starter rows.

When desired length is reached, finish the round you are working, and finish off.

Weave in all ends, trimming excess yarn as necessary.

Ribbed Edging
Chain 4, turn.

Using back loops only single crochet across, adding a chain at the end of each row for turning.
Keep crocheting until you have a length of ribbed crochet work that fits around the base of the beanie sideways without stretching too much.

Leaving a long tail for sewing, cut yarn.  Using tapestry needle, sew ribbing to bottom of the beanie, and then sew two ends of ribbing together at the back of the hat to create a complete circle.  (You may want to use stitch markers to hold the ribbing in place as you sew.

Pom-Pom
First cut a piece of yarn about 12 inches long and set it aside. You will use this piece to tie up your pom-pom yarn to keep it all together. Then start wrapping your pom-pom yarn around your hand. (I used 3 fingers for this hat)

Keep wrapping until you have quite a bit of yarn wrapped around your hand.

For a nice full pom-pom, you need to wrap A LOT of yarn. Don't be shy. You can always pull some out if it's too full, but adding more yarn after your pom-pom is made is impossible.

Pull your bundle of wrapped yarn off your hand carefully and lay it down over the cut piece of yarn that you had set aside, holding the folded ends firmly.

Wrap the cut length of yarn around and around and around the middle of the bundle, pulling it very tightly with each wrap. Tie a good strong knot but DO NOT trim the ends of the tying yarn. You can use these long ends to attach the pom-pom to the top of the hat.

Using your sharpest scissors, cut the loops on one side of the tied bundle.

Now you have a nice little crazy looking ball of yarn, with two long ends sticking out. You can leave it this way if you like, or you can give it a haircut.

For a nice tight pom-pom, again using your sharp scissors, trim all around the pom-pom so that all the yarn ends are even and the pom-pom is the size you want it.

Finally, using the two long strings, attach the pom-pom to the top of your hat.
